Dermatopathology Rotation Goals/Objectives for PGY-3
Patient Care
Goal: To provide skin biopsy evaluation that is effective in assisting clinicians with diagnosis
and optimizing patient outcomes.
Objectives:

1. Consistently able to extract pertinent information from the pathology requisition. PC4
2. Consistently recognizes and correctly identifies common histopathologic findings
   (develops a “good eye”); able to troubleshoot (e.g.. tissue artifacts, processing and
   sampling issues). PC4
3. Understands and applies algorithms in the work-up for cases. PC4
4. Consistently develops a comprehensive and weighted differential diagnosis based on the
   histopathologic findings. PC4 and PC7
5. Recognizes appropriate ancillary tests and refines knowledge of “next steps” and proper
   utilization for application to differential. PC6
6. Usually interprets tissue margins and the results of special stains, including whether
   control tissue stained appropriately. PC4
7. Correlates the clinical differential diagnosis with gross and microscopic pathologic
   findings. PC4
8. Usually interprets and applies histologic findings to clinical care accurately. PC4
9. Knows when synoptic reporting is required. PC4
10. Consistently seeks appropriate specialist consultations. PC4
11. Understands the role of specific advanced precision diagnostics and personalized
    medicine assays, and how results affect patient diagnosis and prognosis, and overall

    Medical Knowledge
    Goal: To acquire knowledge in dermatopathology, demonstrate competence in knowledge of
    topics specified by the American Board of Dermatology and develop expertise in
    clinicopathologic correlation.
    Objectives:
12. Usually demonstrates knowledge of the clinical and laboratory manifestations, expected
    course and management options of common and uncommon neoplastic and inflammatory
    conditions and usually identifies and communicates those which are urgent. MK1
13. Usually identifies histopathologic findings of common skin disorders correctly. MK2

15. Formulates an expanded and weighted differential diagnosis for inflammatory and non-
    inflammatory disorders. MK1
16. Recognizes histologic features of most benign and malignant cutaneous tumors. MK2
17. Demonstrates knowledge of the indications and cost of special stains, immuno-
    fluorescence, and Immunohistochemistry. MK1
18. Usually applies basic science knowledge to dermatologic disorders, and relates advances

Goal: Develop skills in acquiring, analyzing, applying and teaching dermatopathology
knowledge. Develop the ability to self-analyze.

1. Actively seeks appropriate resources to find dermatology information to answer clinical
